C.I.T.E.S stands for Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and is an international agreement between governments to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.

Hoodia Gordonii is classified as a protected plant in South Africa, due to its limited supply and high demand. For this reason, to legally export Hoodia Gordonii you need to have an export permit from CITES which proves the authenticity and legality of Hoodia Gordonii plants used in a particular brand of Hoodia product.
