The Nine Day Liver Detox
What better way to press reset than by giving your body the care and attention it’s been quietly asking for? A thoughtfully structured nine-day reset can be a chance to step away from excess, refocus your habits, and reconnect with how you actually feel day to day. Rather than a quick fix, it’s an opportunity to nourish your system, restore balance, and build momentum toward lasting wellbeing.
Over the course of nine days, small but intentional changes like eating more whole, nutrient-dense foods, staying properly hydrated, prioritizing sleep, and reducing everyday stressors can leave you feeling lighter, clearer, and more energised. You may notice brighter skin, steadier energy levels, improved digestion, and a more positive mindset. Just as importantly, it creates space to break unhelpful patterns and replace them with routines that genuinely support your health.
Think of it less as a “detox” and more as a reset with purpose: a chance to realign your body and mind, and to emerge feeling refreshed, rebalanced, and ready to carry those habits forward.
Five habits to break
Wheat: Found in bread, pasta, cereals and a whole host of other foods. This isn’t particularly great for our digestive tracts.
Milk: Then there are the traces of hormones and antibiotics found in milk, which again put stress on your liver.
Caffeine: Your liver has to work very hard to detoxify caffeine, which will distract it from breaking down other toxins.
Alcohol: Taxes your liver and gut, causes cancer, destroys nutrients and is dehydrating.
Bad fats: They’re difficult to digest and slow to detoxify, clogging up your liver for long periods when it could be dealing with other toxins.
Five habits to make
Stay hydrated: Drinking around 1½ litres of water a day will boost your energy and mental clarity.
Superfoods: Eat five each day as they are packed with nutrients and antioxidants.
Sleep: Your liver is most active in many of its metabolic and repair processes while you sleep. Poor sleep can disrupt these processes, so aim for 7–9 hours and a regular sleep schedule during your reset.
Exercise: Regular movement whether it’s walking, strength training, or light cardio as it supports circulation, metabolism, helps regulate blood sugar and fat metabolism.
Gut health: Eating fiber-rich foods and adding fermented options like yogurt, kefir, or sauerkraut can support a healthier gut environment.
The 5-a-Day Rule for a Healthier Liver
One of the simplest ways to detoxify your liver is to set yourself the rule of eating five superfood portions a day. These can include:
- A tablespoon a day of ground seeds.
- A serving a day of super greens (a handful each of baby spinach leaves, watercress, parsley and basil with either sun blush tomatoes, pine nuts, pumpkin seeds or avocado).
- A serving of any of the following vegetables: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower or kale.
- A garlic clove, a small onion, a shallot or four spring onions every day.
- A home-made superfood juice or smoothie drink.
