Oolong tea, also known as Wulong, is a traditional Chinese tea made from the Camellia sinensis plant. It is partially oxidized, placing it between green tea (unoxidized) and black tea (fully oxidized). This unique processing gives Oolong its distinctive flavour - often described as a blend of fruity, floral, honeyed, and toasty notes - with a fragrant, floral aroma. A typical cup contains 30-50 mg of caffeine, offering a moderate energy boost.

Beyond its flavour, Oolong tea is prized for its health benefits. Rich in natural polyphenols, it may help boost metabolism, support fat burning, and reduce belly fat and LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Our loose leaf tea is Tie Guan Yin (also spelled Tie Kuan Yin), famously known as the Iron Goddess of Mercy. One of the most renowned and cherished varieties of Oolong tea, it originates from Anxi County in Fujian Province, China. Tie Guan Yin is celebrated for its floral aroma, smooth texture, and rich, complex flavor.

This tea typically has an oxidation level ranging from 10% to 80%, giving it a broad spectrum of flavour profiles - from light and floral to deeper, roasted notes. Its colour can vary from pale golden to amber or even dark brown, and it contains a moderate amount of caffeine, offering a balanced and refreshing experience.

How to Prepare Loose Leaf Oolong Tea

Add 1 teaspoon (2–3g) of Tie Guan Yin loose leaf tea to a 240ml cup, then pour in water heated to just below boiling (90–95°C / 194–203°F). Steep for 2–3 minutes for the first infusion. These high-quality leaves can be re-steeped 3-5 times - just increase the steeping time by about 30 seconds with each additional brew. To preserve the tea’s delicate, floral flavour, avoid over-steeping, as it can turn bitter if left too long.
