What is Pu-erh Tea?
Pu-erh Tea (also spelled puer, pu’er, or 普洱茶 in Chinese) is a unique variety of fermented tea known for its earthy flavour, rich complexity, and remarkable aging potential - often compared to fine wine or aged whiskey.
Beyond its distinctive taste, Pu-erh tea is widely appreciated for its potential health benefits, particularly in weight management. It’s traditionally consumed to help digest fatty foods, support metabolism, and lower cholesterol levels.
Named after Pu’er City in China’s Yunnan Province, Pu-erh tea has deep historical roots. For centuries, it was compressed into bricks or cakes to facilitate transport along the legendary Tea Horse Road, where it was traded for horses and goods with Tibet and other neighboring regions.
During these long journeys and extended periods of storage, the tea naturally fermented and aged, developing a smoother, more complex flavor. This process, initially a byproduct of trade logistics, eventually became a defining feature of Pu-erh tea - leading to the deliberate fermentation and aging techniques used by tea makers today.
Benefits of Pu-erh Tea
1. Aids Digestion:
Puerh is often consumed after meals in Chinese culture, especially after heavy or greasy foods as it can help stimulate gastric acid secretion, improve fat breakdown and relieve bloating and discomfort.
2. Supports Weight Management:
Puerh tea may aid weight loss by suppressing the appetite, burning fat and boosting the metabolism.
3. Lowers Cholesterol:
Puerh may help manage blood lipid levels as it lowers LDL (bad cholesterol), raises HDL (good cholesterol) and reduces triglycerides. This can then lead to a potentially healthy heart over time.
4. Provides Antioxidants:
Like other teas, Pu-erh is rich in polyphenols, which can fight free radicals, slow oxidative stress and support overall cellular health and aging.
5. Boosts Mental Alertness:
Contains moderate caffeine, which can improve focus and clarity and enhance energy without the jitters of coffee.
6. Supports Gut Health:
The microbial fermentation process gives Pu-erh probiotic-like properties. It may help to balance gut bacteria and improve digestion and immune function.
7. May Reduce Stress:
Some aged Puerhs have calming properties which promote relaxation.
How to Prepare Pu-erh Tea
Our premium Puerh Tea is crafted to the highest standards to ensure exceptional quality and flavor. Each teabag is designed for multiple infusions, allowing you to enjoy two cups of nourishing tea from a single bag.
1. Place one Puerh teabag into a cup and add freshly boiled water. Allow it to steep for at least 1½ minutes. For best results, cover your mug or use a teapot while brewing to retain more of the tea’s natural goodness. Once brewed, set the teabag aside for a second use.
2. When ready for a second cup, reuse the same teabag and steep it in freshly boiled water for at least 2½ minutes to extract the remaining flavor and benefits. After this second infusion, discard the teabag.
Facts about Pu-erh Tea
1. Puerh Tea is named after a trade hub:
Pu-erh tea gets its name from Pu’er City in Yunnan Province, China—a major tea trading center during the Tang and Ming dynasties. It was the starting point for the ancient Tea Horse Road, where tea was traded for horses and other goods.
2. It is often sold in compressed shapes:
Puerh tea is commonly found in cakes (bingcha), bricks (zhuancha), tuo (bowl-shaped nests), or even mushroom shapes. This was originally done to make transport easier and more compact.
3. It gets better with age:
Unlike most teas that go stale over time, high-quality Puerh improves with age, sometimes for decades. A well-aged Puerh can fetch a lot of money per cake and is often considered an investment, like wine or whiskey.
4. It’s a living tea:
Pu-erh undergoes microbial fermentation, meaning it’s rich with beneficial bacteria and fungi. The microbial community evolves over time, contributing to its complex flavour and potential health benefits.
5. It can be brewed 10+ times:
Good Puerh can be steeped repeatedly—sometimes more than 15 infusions from the same leaves—each infusion offering a subtly different taste.
6. Made from Ancient tea trees:
Many premium Puerhs are made from “gushu” (古树), or ancient tea trees, some over 500 years old. These old trees grow wild or semi-wild and are believed to produce more potent and flavorful leaves.
7. Puerh ages like a collectible:
Puerh is often dated by year, and collectors seek out vintage cakes from famous mountains or factories. Some have even been found in ancient tombs, still drinkable.
8. It is used in traditional Chinese medicine:
Historically, Puerh has been used to aid digestion, “cut the grease” after heavy meals and warm the body to support “Qi” energy flow.
