Woman’s weight loss surgery ‘made her baby blind’

Woman's weight loss surgery 'made her baby blind'Weight loss surgery can cause women to give birth to blind children, a study has shown, which may interest people trying to decide whether to opt for over-the-counter diet pills or more drastic measures.

A group of Australian clinicians found that a child was born blind as a result of vitamin A deficiency, which was caused by his mother’s obesity surgery.

These findings were published in the Journal of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

Lead investigator Dr Glen Gole, of the department of ophthalmology at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, said: “This case illustrates that vitamin A is very important for normal eye development in the foetus, particularly for pregnant women who have undergone gastric bypass surgery in order to improve their fertility.”

Earlier in the year, Yvonne Bishop-Weston, a nutritionist for pregnancy and ovulation test manufacturers First Response, said diet can affect fertility.

She suggested that that men should eat eight portions a day of organic fruit and veg and take an antioxidant supplement a day in order to improve their fertility.
