Walking for a mile ‘can burn at least 100 calories’

Those who want to lose weight now that Christmas is over should take up walking, as a mile-long stroll burns at least 100 calories, Ramblers has claimed.

Maria Castellina, a spokeswoman for the walking charity, said people should try to make changes to their daily routines to ensure that they take part in this form of exercise regularly.

“Making simple differences to your everyday routine, like walking to work rather than taking the bus, can help you to control your weight and even save a few pennies too,” she explained.

She went on to say that those taking up off-road walking as a regular activity should invest in some decent footwear, however, a good pair of trainers will suffice for those just starting out.

Ms Castellina’s comments follow the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, at which a study was presented, showing that walking five miles each week slows cognitive decline in people with Alzheimer’s disease.
