Dr Sarah Brewer, author of The Essential Guide to Vitamins, Minerals and Herbal Supplements, advised those looking to shift weight to exercise lots and eat more healthily.
She recommended people eat more fruit and vegetables as well as sources of protein like lean meat and fish and cut back on carbohydrates.
However, she added: "For some people, rather than needing to have a protein-high, low-carb diet, just cutting back on what you eat will work – going without dessert and cutting out the alcohol."
Atkins pinpointed last Monday (October 25th) as the day on which many people embark on their Christmas party diets.
Dr Brewster reassured slimmers that weight loss can be achieved in a relatively short period of time and that people can drop a dress size by next month if they obey their new healthy routines.
