A recent study of 3,500 runners from seven European countries found that 40% ran to lose weight.
But while weight-loss is a goal desired by many runners, it isn’t always simple to reach. On the face of it, it seems straightforward. Running for 35 miles burns 3,500 calories, which would see a 0.45kg loss. But it rarely works out this way.
One of the reasons is that, the more you exercise, the more your body naturally tries to compensate by changing your metabolism through a number of protective mechanisms which are designed to prevent starvation and indefinite weight loss.

But more commonly, the reason people don’t lose always lose the weight they expect to through running, is that, post-run, they slow down for the rest of the day. It’s a trend many scientists have seen by fitting runners attempting to lose weight with motion sensors or heart-rate monitors.
It’s recommended that runners wanting to lose weight invest in an activity monitor so they can check that they are still maintaining the same number of steps and overall activity when they are not running. It is also possible to up your chances of burning more calories by changing your running regime to include more high-intensity training.
