Number of people seeking weight loss surgery quadruples in Scotland
The number of people in Scotland seeking weight loss surgery has quadrupled in the last two years, new figures have revealed.
According to NHS Lothian, there are four times as many applicants for weight loss surgery in 2010 than in 2008, with one person a week now having bariatric surgery, the Scotsman reports.
The health board’s medical director Dr Charles Swainson said the figures illustrate that more should be done to promote natural means of weight loss, such as following a healthy diet and doing plenty of exercise.
He explained: “The fundamental thing is that people have to learn how to lose weight and then maintain a healthy lifestyle, which can be done with help from their GP in their community.”
It come after a study by more than 400 scientists from 280 research institutions across the world found that many people are predisposed to put on weight because of their genes, not matter how hard they try.
