Healthy weight ‘key to healthy heart’

Healthy weight 'key to healthy heart'People who follow a weight loss diet and achieve a healthy weight could see an improvement in their heart health, it has been suggested.

According to Maureen Mulvihill, head of health promotion at the Irish Heart Foundation, eating well is "essential for good health", protecting against conditions like disease and stroke.

People who are hoping to lose weight and boost their heart health should consume foods such as wholemeal breads, cereals, fruits and vegetables, while avoiding items like biscuits and cooking oils, she advised.

"By following the guidelines of the food pyramid and using it to plan your daily meals, you can help to control your weight and cholesterol which are two significant risk factors of heart disease," the expert added.

Her comments were echoed by Gina Hemmings, a Pilates teacher and beauty therapist, who recently advised people to "go back to basics" and combine a nutritionally-balanced diet with regular exercise.
