Eggs ‘support weight loss’

Eating one or more eggs a day can improve health and help with weight loss, according to recent research.

A study to be published in the June issue of the journal Nutrition & Food Science shows that eggs are one of the most nutrient-dense foods around.

It suggests that people should be eating at least one egg each day in order to fully reap the rewards of the farmyard food.

Nutrition scientists found that eggs are not only low in calories, but a rich source of protein and packed with essential nutrients, such as vitamin D, vitamin B12, selenium and choline.

Lead author of the study Dr Carrie Ruxton, a dietician and registered public health nutritionist, said: “The health benefits of eggs would appear to be so great that it’s perhaps no exaggeration to call them a super-food.”

She went on to call eggs an “ideal food at every stage of life” and noted they are also easy to cook.

Last month, rhubarb emerged as the new super-food after researchers from Sheffield Hallam University found it contains cancer-killing chemicals.
