Diet alone 'is not responsible for weight gain'Diet is not the only thing that is responsible for weight gain, genetics also plays a part, a study involving fruit flies has shown.

Researchers from the department of genetics at North Carolina State University conducted a study using 146 different genetic lines of fruit flies.

These were fed four different diets – nutritionally balanced, low-calorie, high-sugar, and high-fat.

A variety of metabolic traits in the flies, including body weight, were then measured and it was discovered that flies in some of the genetic lines were highly sensitive to their diets.

Others, however, experienced no weight gain across the different diets.

“This study strongly suggests that some individuals can achieve benefits from altering their dietary habits, while the same changes for others will have virtually no effect,” a statement from the Genetics Society of America said.

Earlier this month, research conducted by Imperial College London suggested that eating a diet that is low in meat can help people to lose weight and keep it off.
