Certain diets ‘can calm allergies’
It is common knowledge that adopting a healthy diet can aid in weight loss, but what is less well known is that this can also calm the symptoms of allergies.
Lindsey McManus, head of information and training at Allergy UK, has revealed that there is some hope for hayfever sufferers in the form of a certain vegetable.
“There are some foods that seem to calm down allergic reactions; things like quercetin – which is found in onions I believe – that is supposed to calm things down, like hayfever,” she explained.
Ms McManus’ comments follow the publication of a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which suggests that those who eat a western diet are more likely to suffer from allergies and inflammatory diseases.
The researchers involved in the study came to this conclusion after comparing the diet and gut conditions of children who lived in Florence with those who live in a rural village in Burkina Faso in west Africa.
