Can hot sauce help you lose weight?
Many people like to smother the occasional evening meal in hot sauce to spice things up a bit, but a new study has suggested that their favourite condiment may actually help them to lose weight.
Dr Ali Tavakkoli, from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Surgery, has led a new study in which he and colleagues determine whether capsaicin – which is the component responsible for a chilli pepper’s heat – can help to boost weight loss.
The experts demonstrated that a procedure known as vagal de-afferentation, which uses capsaicin, significantly reduced total body fat in subjects, particularly around the belly.
Dr Tavakkoli said the results of the study could lead to the development of new ways to lose weight and keep it off.
“High visceral fat volume is a marker of obesity and obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes. Preferentially lost visceral fat after vagal de-afferentation highlights the potential for this procedure,” he added.
