Altering diet ‘can boost immune system’

Altering diet 'can boost immune system'People can reduce their risk of getting ill this winter by altering their diets to include more fruit and vegetables, a study has suggested.

America's Phytonutrient Report: Immune Health by Color has revealed that those who do not meet their recommended daily fruit and vegetable intakes are more likely to fall short in vitamins A, C, and E, zinc and selenium, all of which research suggests can support a healthy immune system.

"During cold and flu season, it is especially important … [to] eat a variety of colourful plant-based foods which provide phytonutrients and important immune-boosting vitamins and minerals too," said Dr Keith Randolph, technology strategist for Nutrilite.

Earlier in the year, researchers from the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University revealed that losing weight can boost a person's immune system and could help them to live a longer life.
